Melanie Klein Vienna-born, Melanie Klein became a British subject in 1934, and went on to become a leading figure in British psychoanalysis. Her influence in the British Psychoanalytical Society was substantial, and this influence extended across the Americas and Europe in the 1960s. To reach the younger child's private world, Klein turned to their natural means of expression: play. She gave each child in her practice an individual set of small toys and made interpretations of the unconscious significance of the play. With this technique she was able to analyse children in the third year of life.

About D.W. Winnicott
Donald Woods Winnicott (1896–1971) was one of Britain's foremost pediatricians and psychoanalysts. He studied at the Leys School and at Jesus College, both in Cambridge, before training as a physician at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London. He worked at Queen's Hospital and Paddington Green Children's Hospital and in private practice with adults and children from the 1930s until his death. During the Second World War, he made BBC broadcasts to parents and worked with his second wife, Clare, in the Oxfordshire Evacuation Scheme. After the war, they contributed to the government planning of Children's Services. Winnicott was a child and adult analyst and a training analyst for the British Psychoanalytical Society and its President from 1956 to 1959 and from 1965 to 1968. He was President of the Paediatric Section of the Royal Society of Medicine (1952) and of the Association for Child Psychology and Psychiatry. Winnicott was a clinician committed to the dissemination of psychoanalytic ideas to wider global audiences, and he addressed a large variety of groups of professionals in his many talks, lectures, and publications.

O D.W.Winnicott ήταν ο πρώτος που εισήγαγε την ιδέα της "αρκετά καλής μητέρας", της μητέρας που δεν ήταν τέλεια και ήταν ελεύθερη μέχρι ένα βαθμό και να αποτύχει στην φροντίδα του παιδιού της. Ο Winnicott υποστήριζε ότι η αποτυχία ήταν ένα αναγκαίο κομμάτι στην ανατροφή των παιδιών και ότι μέσα από την αποτυχία του γονέα το παιδί αντιλαμβάνεται τα όρια των δικών του δυνάμεων και την πραγματικότητα ενός όχι τέλειου κόσμου. Από το 1943-1962 ηχογράφησε 50 ραδιοφωνικές εκπομπές με τον τίτλο "The ordinary devoted mother and her baby" που αναμεταδόθηκαν από το ραδιόφωνο του BBC. Ο στόχος των εκπομπών αυτών ήταν οι μητέρες που δεν είχαν πρόσβαση σε εξειδικευμένη βοήθεια και θεραπεία. Στις εκπομπές αυτές εφηύρε μια νέα γλώσσα μέσω της οποίας μιλούσε με απλό και κατανοητό τρόπο για το βρέφος, για την ανάπτυξη του και την σημασία της σχέσης με την μητέρα, τους γονεϊκούς ρόλους, τα συναισθήματα ενοχής και ζήλειας, το γιατί τα βρέφη κλαίνε, το θηλασμό κ.α. Οι εκπομπές του αυτές είχαν εξαιρετικά μεγάλη απήχηση.
